Supermarkets Race For Super Profits. April 16, 2023. Published by Canadian Dimension.
This cartoon takes aim at the predatory and oligopolistic grocery market in Canada which is dominated by three major corporations. During the last few years, through the pandemic and inflation, corporations like Loblaws have enjoyed record profits while raising the prices on many staple food products and grossly underpaying its workers. All the while, food bank usage throughout Canada is breaking records. According to a report published by Food Banks Canada, there has been a 35% increase in food bank visits since 2019, and it’s only expected to get worse. It begs the question: who are these supermarkets really feeding?
